Non-competitive practice, expert instruction - a safe place to try the challenge of aikido

1 on 1 Aikido Intro Lesson During Monday Class (for adults)

Multnomah Aikikai November 6, 2025

In Aikido, students of all levels practice together, which can sometimes feel overwhelming for beginners. Our 1:1 Aikido Intro. pairs you with a black belt member who will guide you through your first class and provide one-on-one personal instruction. It’s like a private lesson embedded in a group class.

Your lesson is scheduled in conjunction with our regular Monday 6pm group class. Your guide will greet you and orient you to the dojo. As class begins, you’ll experience the warm-up segment along with other students. This includes breathing, stretching, and coordination exercises.

As the class shifts to paired practice, you’ll segue to a one-on-one lesson under the care of your experienced guide. They will teach you foundational movements and key principles to help you feel grounded, confident, and ready to grow in the art of Aikido. You are on the mat, with the class for the entire hour, working one-on-one with your guide. As class finishes, you’ll have a chance to meet dojo members, and ask questions. Allocate 90 minutes for the whole experience (5:45pm to 7:15pm).

When you book your appointment, look for a Monday slot on the calendar that displays the time (5:45pm). Click to advance to the next screen and fill out the brief form. The lesson is $37. You may pay by credit card or EFT. If you need to reschedule your appointment please contact us by email at dojo@multnomahaikikai.com

We ask that you arrive at 5:45pm so that your guide can greet you and orient you to the dojo before class begins at 6pm. Free street parking is usually readily available on S. Dakota Street. From there, walk up to our entrance located on Macadam Ave. If you are taking the bus, know that the 35 stops just a half block south of the dojo entrance.

We recommend you bring a T-shirt and soft “work out” pants that cover your knees. Dressing rooms are available. We ask that you remove any jewelry before stepping onto the mat. If you wear eyeglasses it’s fine to keep those on. We practice barefoot. If you have any questions about your appointment feel free to contact us at dojo@multnomahaikikai.com

Applying the Method of Scaffolding to Aikido - by Xenia Wirth
Jul 27, 2025

Scaffolding is a term used in education to refer to a teaching strategy where a complex skill or topic is broken down into smaller parts, allowing students to gradually absorb concepts in more manageable chunks until the topic is mastered. I was a teacher for about five years earlier in my career, and I find myself encountering similar strategies in my aikido training.

What I Wish I Knew When I Started Aikido - by Dennis Velasquez
Apr 7, 2025

What I wish I knew when I started aikido… by Dennis Velasquez: I found myself reflecting on what I wish I had known when I first stepped onto the mat. What would have helped me feel more at ease? What might have made those early days a little less confusing and a lot more encouraging? Here’s what I came up with; advice and insights I’d share with anyone who’s just beginning, or even thinking about beginning, their journey in Aikido.
