Starting Aikido as an adult student is easy. You’ve got a few options.

If you are ready to start practicing aikido, simply register as a Regular Member, reserve a spot in your first class, and show up for class about 15 minutes early. We recommend beginners start with two of the three core body arts classes: Monday 6pm, Wednesday 6pm, or Saturday 10:30am.

1:1 Aikido Intro. Lesson During Monday Class

Our 1:1 Aikido Intro. pairs you with a certified teacher, Rachel Tonkovich Sensei, to guide you through your first class including one-on-one personal instruction. It’s like a private lesson embedded in a regular group class. $37

Rolling Lesson on Saturday

This is an opportunity to get on the mat and experience a basic rolling lesson, one-on-one, under the care of our Chief Instructor, Suzane Van Amburgh Sensei. $47

Options to get started with the dojo (for adults):

Sign up and Start: If you are ready to start practicing aikido, simply register as a Regular Member, reserve a spot in your first class, and show up for your first class about 15 minutes early. If you are interested in practicing Iaido, please book a dojo visit first.

1:1 Aikido Intro Lesson During Monday Class (for adults): In Aikido, students of all levels practice together, which can sometimes feel overwhelming for beginners. Our 1:1 Aikido Intro. pairs you with a certified teacher who will guide you through your first class and provide one-on-one personal instruction. It’s like a private lesson embedded in a group class. Your guide will greet you and orient you to essential etiquette as you step onto the mat. As class begins, you’ll experience the warm-up segment along with other students. This includes breathing, stretching, and coordination exercises. As the class shifts to paired practice, you’ll segue to a one-on-one lesson under the care of your highly-experienced guide. They will teach you foundational techniques and key principles to help you feel grounded, confident, and ready to grow in the art of Aikido. You are on the mat, with the class for the entire hour, working one-on-one with your guide. As class finishes, you’ll have a chance to meet dojo members, and ask questions. a chance to get on the mat and get some 1 on 1 instruction under the guidance of a highly experienced blackbelt senior dojo member. These intro lessons are scheduled in conjunction with our regular Monday 6pm group class.

Rolling Lesson on Saturday with the Chief Instructor: This an opportunity to get on the mat and experience the basics of rolling under the care of our Chief Instructor, Suzane Van Amburgh Sensei. Plan to arrive 11:15 am, observe the last 15 minutes of our regular Saturday group class, then the instructor will invite you onto the mat for a 15 minute lesson. This is one-on-one instruction. Other students will be around in the dojo cleaning and preparing for the next group class at noon. You’ll have the full attention of the instructor.
