FALL OPEN HOUSE - adapted to the pandemic!

SAT. October 9, 2021

Get a taste of what it's like to practice aikido or iaido. Explore fun activities to challenge and improve your balance on our mini-circuit training course - The Balance Challenge. Participants will have a chance to step onto the mat and experience guided movement activities that awaken a sensory experience and foster learning by doing. Get ready for fun!

This event includes gentle activities geared toward adults and teens. Plan to wear something comfortable you can move in. Be prepared to take off shoes and socks so that you can practice barefoot. We will all be wearing masks inside the dojo. Sign-in and standard waiver form signature required before stepping onto the mat. This event is for the fully vaccinated. To adapt for the pandemic, we’ll ask you to register ahead for a half hour block. You’ll be with no more than five people in a group. Each group will be guided through a number of brief movement activities by knowledgeable dojo members. We plan to have no more than 15 people in the space at any one time. We are able to maintain good ventilation with plenty of fresh air flowing though the dojo space.

Our intention is to offer a free introduction. However we ask that you preregister for this event. If you are not feeling well on the day of the event please do not attend. If you are unable to attend, please contact us so that we may give your spot to another person. Here's the format for the day:

  • 10:30 am: Dojo members will be setting up the dojo space and the Balance Challenge stations.

  • 11:00 am, Group One arrives: Sign-in with one of our dojo members. Van Amburgh Sensei will guide your group through a series of brief movement activities. Afterward, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about our programs and explore the Balance Challenge stations.

  • 11:30 am, Group Two arrives (see procedure above).

  • 12:05 pm, Group Three arrives (see procedure above)

  • 1:00 pm, All participants may participate outdoors (weather permitting) for an experience and demonstration of bokken and jo practice (the wooden sword and staff).

Reserve your spot on our Registration page. The indoor activities of this event are for the fully vaccinated and face coverings will be required. All are welcome to observe or participate in the outdoor activity (weather permitting) - masks optional.

Apr 7, 2025

What I wish I knew when I started aikido… by Dennis Velasquez: I found myself reflecting on what I wish I had known when I first stepped onto the mat. What would have helped me feel more at ease? What might have made those early days a little less confusing and a lot more encouraging? Here’s what I came up with; advice and insights I’d share with anyone who’s just beginning, or even thinking about beginning, their journey in Aikido.
